A Winter Weekend in La Paz, Honduras: Where to Stay and What to See
La Paz rewards a slow two-night stay: a cool highland capital of cobbled lanes, a hilltop church and easy day loops into the surrounding hills.
Costs, timing and booking sense
Winter is the value season here. Expect mid-range rooms to sit below peak holiday rates, with the widest choice in January and the tightest around the Christmas and New Year weeks, when Honduran families travel and the centre fills. Book at least two to three weeks ahead for a January weekend and earlier for late December. Midweek is noticeably cheaper and quieter. Carry cash for the market and small eateries, since card acceptance outside the main streets is uneven, and confirm whether breakfast is included before you commit.
Comparing the two, the central guesthouse wins for a first weekend: you can walk to everything, and the town is the point. The edge-of-town hotel wins only if you are driving and want an early start. What I would skip is treating La Paz as a transit stop — one night here gives you the cathedral and nothing else. Two nights, a Saturday on foot and a Sunday loop is the version worth booking.
Before you book
The questions people ask about La Paz, answered with this month’s numbers.
January and February are the pick: dry, mild days, cool nights and lower room rates after the Christmas rush. Late December is busier and pricier because Honduran families travel then. Book two to three weeks ahead for a January weekend.
Buses from Tegucigalpa take about three hours on the CA-5. From San Pedro Sula, allow closer to four. Driving the same route is straightforward in daylight but slow after dark, so aim to arrive before dusk.
For a first visit, book central — walkable to the Parque Central, cathedral and market. Choose an edge-of-town hotel only if you are driving and want easy parking and an early start toward the hills. Two nights is enough for either.
